Local SEO for Service Businesses: Complete Beginner's Guide

Local SEO is how small businesses appear when people search for services nearby. Here is what matters and what you can ignore.

What is Local SEO?

Local SEO is the practice of optimising your online presence so you appear when people in your area search for your services. When someone types "physiotherapist Bristol" or "hairdresser near me," local SEO determines whether your business appears in those results — and how high.

The Three Ranking Factors for Local Search

  1. Relevance — does your business match what they're searching for?
  2. Distance — how close is your business to the searcher?
  3. Prominence — how well-known and reviewed is your business?

Step 1: Google Business Profile

Create and fully complete your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business). Add your business name, category, address, phone, website, opening hours, and photos. This is the most impactful free thing you can do for local SEO.

Step 2: Your Website

Your website needs to mention your city and services clearly — not just in meta tags, but in visible content. "Personal trainer in Edinburgh" should appear in your page heading, not just hidden in the code. Include your full address on your website.

Step 3: Reviews

Businesses with more positive reviews rank higher in local search. Ask every satisfied client to leave a Google review. Make it easy — send them a direct link to your Google review page via email or text.

Step 4: Local Citations

A citation is any online mention of your business name, address, and phone number (NAP). Get listed on Yelp, Yell, FreeIndex, and any industry-specific directories. Consistency matters — your name and address must be identical everywhere.

Step 5: Local Content

Write blog content that targets local searches: "Best yoga classes in Manchester," "How to find a trusted electrician in Leeds." This builds topical authority for your location and services.

What to Ignore

Ignore anyone selling "guaranteed first page rankings" — these are scams. Ignore complex technical SEO until you've done the basics. Ignore backlink schemes. Focus on the five steps above and you'll be ahead of 80% of local competitors.
